Punakha

White Water Rafting at Punakha

The Mo Chu is one of the most scenic river stretches giving you a backdrop of the Royal Palace at Punakha in its upper reaches as well as a 360-degree view of the valley in the lower reaches. The best part of this route is that it is easily accessible as well as easy to handle. Being classified as Grade I-II, it is ideal for even children from ages 5 and above. The entire activity lasts for about one and a half hour, covering a distance of 10 kms approximately. The starting point usually is the Khamsum Yulay Namgyal Chorten and the endpoint is the Changyul Village Old Tree. Paro

Chelela to Kila Goenpa Nunnery Hike

Chele La Pass is one of the most beautiful passes in this country and a hike on the ridge to Kila Goenpa Nunnery gives you a breathtaking view of the Paro Valley on one side and the Haa Valley on the other. It is about a drive of an hour and a half from Paro and less than an hour from Haa. The hike takes one through a silver fir forest and is dotted with blooming rhododendron flowers if visiting during Spring-summer. The Kila Nunnery is located on a cliff just below the Chele la pass and marks the end of the trail. The Nunnery is inhabited by around 60-70 nuns and houses a seven temple complex. The site offers a fantastic view of the Mt. Jhomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the Jele Dzong on a clear day. Soak in the rich culture and heritage of Bhutan, one day at a time. The best time to visit the Kila Goenpa in Bhutan is between Sep-Dec and May-June.

Mountain Biking in Bumthang

Punakha Dzong

The Punakha Dzong is the second oldest and second largest of all fortresses in Bhutan. Historically, this architectural marvel built in the 1600s was significant as it was the administrative center fro the then capital of Bhutan and also hosted the first national assembly. Also known as Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang (meaning "the place of great happiness or bliss"), Punakha Dzong stands at the confluence of two major rivers in Bhutan, the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, which converge in this valley. It is simply a visual treat just like its counterpart in Paro.

Chimi Lhakhang, Temple

Chimi Lhakhang is a small Buddhist monastery tucked away on a small hill near Lobesa in the Punakha District of Bhutan. Built in 1499 by Ngawang Choegyel, the monastery is dedicated to the rogue deity Drukpa Kunley who is attributed with the phallic imagery found all over Bhutan. Couples flock here to seek blessings to beget children and hence it is also known as the Fertility Temple of Bhutan. Walk for about half an hour across the field to the temple road. On the trail, you’ll cross rice fields and a tiny stream downhill before the short climb to Chimi Lhakhang.
The best time to visit is during the autumn season (Sep-Nov).

Kurjey Lhakhang, Temple

Kurjey Lhakhang is one of the holiest and most sacred of the monasteries in Bhutan which comprises of three temples. Visit to Kyichu Lhakhang

The Kyerchu Temple or the Kyichu Lhakhang is one of the oldest and most significant of monasteries in Bhutan. The structure is a twin temple, one built in the 7th century while the other in 1968.
