Ghoom is a small hilly locality in the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region situated at an altitude of 2,258 meters. Ghoom railway station of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the highest railway station in India. The place is the home of the Ghum Monastery and the Batasia Loop, a bend of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Batasia Loop

A paradise for nature lovers, the Batasia Loop is specifically known for its spiral, narrow gauge railway track on which the Toy Train makes a complete loop around a wonderful circular garden. The Batasia Loop is approximately 5 kilometers away from Darjeeling town and close to Ghum. If you are lucky enough then on a clear sunny day you will get a breath-taking view of the Khangchendzonga range.

Ghoom Monastery

Yi Gha Choling Gompa is more popularly known as Ghoom Monastery is located above the main road ahead of the Ghoom Post Office. Many travel guides and taxi drivers take tourist to the monastery located below Hill Cart road and Ghoom Railway station which is Samten Choeling monastery and called it old Ghoom monastery. It was established in 1850 by the famous Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso. He was later succeeded by very venerable late Khabje Domo Geshe Ngawang Kalsang Rinpoche. It was during Domo Geshi Rinpoche's tenure that the 15 feet high image of the great Maitreya Buddha was commissioned.

DHR Museum

In 1999, the famous narrow gauge Toy Train of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status. And in the year 2000, the Ghoom Museum was established and opened to the visitors to showcase its heritage. Right opposite the Ghoom platform, there is the entry gate to the museum premises. As you enter through the gate, there is an open space with a small garden around with the much touted Baby Sivok, the oldest toy train engine of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways that started its operation in 1881 providing the first ever rail link through the mountains. This one of the three DHR museums other two museums are situated in Kurseong and Sukna.
